Chennai's Madras Christian College has introduced a cutting-edge device in the form of a smart duck to monitor the water quality of a lake situated within its expansive 300-acre campus in Tambaram. This IoT-enabled, remotely operated duck will glide through the lake, collecting real-time data on seven vital parameters such as water temperature, dissolved oxygen, turbidity, and pH. The lake, a crucial water source on the campus, was cleaned by Bisleri International Limited as part of its corporate social responsibility initiative, which also provided funding for the development of a water quality monitoring prototype. A team from MCC-MRF Innovation Park constructed a 3D-printed duck equipped with sensors and developed an app to receive and analyze the gathered data. Principal Paul Wilson highlighted the importance of using this data to make informed decisions to safeguard the campus's ecology and wildlife. The innovative idea of deploying the smart duck was his brainchild. The solar-powered duck can operate for up to two days without sunlight and has the provision for manual charging when necessary. The startup responsible for creating the duck, KOLOZEN, has been successfully collecting and transmitting data for the past two weeks. Researchers are considering deploying similar ducks in other water bodies beyond the campus to monitor water quality and provide valuable data to local authorities. This information could offer insights into the behavior of water bodies during different seasons, environmental conditions, health status, and potential disease risks. Professor T Pradeep from the Department of Chemistry at IIT Madras emphasized the significant potential of creating a hydro informatics platform based on this data. The MCC campus houses a diverse ecosystem, including approximately 90 spotted deer, porcupines, toddy cats, and bats. The cameras installed on campus help the college monitor the movements of wild animals.
